The NFOL Chairmans Charity this year is,
The Blackmore Vale Branch (BVB), RNLI is delighted to have been invited to attend the Rally as this year’s charity. Although the RNLI will be widely known to your membership, it might not be known that it is self-supporting, receiving no government funding and entirely dependent on the generosity and support of the public.
The BVB is one of many inshore Branches across the country, who with the Branches located on the coast, help to raise the funds to save lives at sea and on our beaches throughout the United Kingdom.
The BVB covers the area of North Dorset, which includes the towns of Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Stalbridge and Sturminster Newton and surrounding rural areas. Our major Fundraising event in recent years has been the annual Michaelmas Fair, held at Port Regis. Over a period of 12 years (2005 – 2017), this Fair raised in the region of £1/3 m for the RNLI.
You may be interested to know that we have a close relationship with a local Dorset Lifeboat Station. It is in Swanage, where the Station has recently been rebuilt to accommodate their new Shannon Class Lifeboat. We donated over £70k, raised in the Vale in 2013 and 2014 towards the costs of this project. The new Station and Lifeboat are well worth a visit, if you happen to be in the area, and you will be warmly received there.
The RNLI mans 238 Lifeboats around our coast, and an increasing number of Lifeguards are now stationed on our beaches. The cost in 2018 was a staggering £163m. During this 12 months, Lifeboats and Lifeguards were called out to 19,450 incidents, saved 118 lives and assisted 32,000 people in difficulty, including a high number of children off the beaches. These statistics make our fundraising efforts so very worthwhile.
One of the many ways of raising funds is the RNLI Shop, selling a number of attractive items, including Christmas cards for 2019. Please do visit us at our stand, open on Friday 20th September and Saturday 21st September, at your Rally at the Motcombe Showground. You will not be able to miss the two flag poles flying the RNLI flag above our site. All profits will go towards saving lives at sea.
